Coach Matt Smith

Coach Matt resides in Denver, Colorado and has been actively involved in competitive endurance and multisport racing and training for over 10 years. Matt grew up as a distance swimmer competing at the state level in the 500/1500 freestyle events, as well as riding mountain bikes and running for his high school cross country team (ranked 13th out of 14 participants).

His multisport career really started after a sedentary college experience.  Upon graduating at 235lbs and deciding that he needed something to motivate him to get in better shape and live a healthier lifestyle, Matt signed up for his first triathlon.  Since winning his first X-Terra sprint race, he went on to qualify for X-Terra National Championships, then went after a lifelong dream of completing an Ironman and switched to the road.

Matt has competed in the Ironman World Championships, placing 13th in his age group, is a 3 time winner of the Steamboat Springs triathlon and hold the course record.  Coach Matt is well known in the local triathlon community and can typically be found post race on the podium.   Matt and his wife, Molly, both are officers in the Rocky Mountain Triathlon Club and race for the Runner’s Roost triathlon team.  He is a small business owner and involved in the local and international community as a volunteer. Coach Matt serves the state of Colorado on the Governor’s Workforce Development Council and has travelled to Yetobon Ethiopia to build sustainable economic development program. He continues to be involved locally through the Cunningham Foundation.

Throughout his career, Matt has been committed to developing people and coaching and holds a master’s degree in leadership and personal development.  He continues to learn personally and is especially interested in nutrition and diet for athletes focusing on sustainable, local and organic foods. Coach Matt looks forward to sharing is knowledge of the sport with his clients.

Coaching Philosophies:

I believe in maximizing the amount of time an athlete has to train by making sure that every workout counts for that athlete and that they have the proper time to recover from the workout and adapt to it.  I also believe in taking the time to think about and plan fueling not just for race day, but everyday and focus on sustainable, local and organic foods to do so.  Lastly, I take an integrated approach to coaching, looking at how triathlon and multisport fit into someone’s life and marry their personal goals in life so that the whole person is incorporated into the training plans.

Coaching Experience:

I have worked in higher education for most of my career and have been a life and career coach for students and business people.  I have coached myself as an athlete and developed my thoughts and practices from trial and error in the process.
